Halep advances to third round at Indian Wells


World No. 1 Simona Halep thundered into the third round of the Indian Wells WTA competition, overwhelming Kristyna Pliskova 6-4, 6-4 on Friday. 

The 26-year-old Romanian will meet the champ of a match between American special case Caroline Dolehide and Dominika Cibulkova, of Slovakia. 

"I was prepared to play. I was prepared to work and prepared to battle," Halep said. "It was a pleasant day. 

"It wasn't a simple match. Yet, I am extremely upbeat I won my first match here and I get an opportunity to play once more." 

Halep and Caroline Wozniacki have been alternating at No. 1 this year. 

Denmark's Wozniacki took the world number one positioning in the wake of winning the Australian Open yet Halep recovered it from her only before the tip top Indian Wells hardcourt occasion. 

Wozniacki will play her first match of the competition on Saturday against qualifier Lara Arruabarrena. 

The 2015 Indian Wells champion Halep won 58 percent of her first serves and made only one twofold blame in the 75 minute match. 

Pliskova, who is positioned 77th on the planet, impacted eight pros yet had her serve broken six times as she battled relentlessly with her second serve.
